That's our philosophy - both personal and paddling. We are passionate about kayaking and eager to share the sport with you. We are proud to offer private tours and the highest quality instructional programs for all skill levels.

Our instructors are certified by the British Canoe Union, the American Canoe Association, or both. We guarantee a low client-to-teacher ratio.

Carpe Diem Kayaking offers classes, tours, custom programs and private lessons along the coast of Maine.

Locations

Carpe Diem Kayaking teaches primarily in the Mount Desert area of coastal Maine.  We are willing to travel reasonable distances to meet the needs of our clients.  If you are interested in a training, assessment tour or customized program, call us or e-mail us to schedule both time and place.

Owners and principle instructors:

Mark Rice-Schoon, is a BCU Coach Level 4 (Sea), BCU A3 Assessor, BCU Canoe Safety Test Assessor, an ACA Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor with the Traditional Paddling endorsement, and a Registered Maine Guide (Sea Kayaking). In his spare time he enjoys listening to music, reading, and photography.

Mel Rice-Schoon is a BCU Coach Level 3T, an ACA Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor with the Traditional Paddling endorsement, and a Registered Maine Guide (Sea Kayaking). She writes stuff in her “spare” time.
